Maldon Croquet Club comes to Hatfield PeverelThe Club was established in 2011 at Drapers Farm in Heybridge. After three years it relocated to Forrester Park Golf Complex and grew into the Club it is today of some sixty members. Forrester Park was sold in 2022 and at the end of the summer the new owner wished to use the area we played on for other purposes. The Club was fortunate enough to be approached by the Bowls Club in Hatfield Peverel who have a very popular indoor Bowling area, but use of their outdoor lawn had become difficult, due to the intensive maintenance required and lack of outdoor players. The opportunity to become an affiliated Club to Hatfield Peverel Bowls Club was welcomed by MCC, who have undertaken to maintain the lawn using a specialist contractor, in exchange for the use of the lawn for playing Croquet in the forthcoming summer period. Hopefully this arrangement will be successful for both Clubs and a more permanent long term affiliation will give MCC a settled home in Hatfield |Peverel. The game of Croquet is suitable for all ages and genders to play and might be likened to a combination of snooker and chess. No great physical strength is required and therefore appeals to all, particularly older persons with more leisure time. Internal competitions playable with pairs of players, and some in singles, take place during the season. MCC is also a member of the East Anglian Croquet Federation and league matches on a home and away basis take place. In 2020 MCC won the regional league but were knocked out in the National semi -finals. The most popular games are those known as ‘Roll ups’, which members attend several times a week, when names are drawn out of the hat for playing partners, and after one game go back into the draw again. This gives an opportunity for all members to develop their skills regardless of their experience or expertise.Maldon Croquet Club welcomes visitors and groups who may wish to have a go, when teaching and equipment is provided for a modest fee.We look forward to becoming an addition to the vibrant Hatfield Peverel community.Further details are available on our website : https://maldoncroquetclub.org.ukNeil ClarkChairman MCC
Croquet is one of the finest outdoor sports. It is a friendly game combining ball skills as well as tactics, it’s relatively easy to understand, and it’s fun to play.We are always pleased to receive new members, of any age or level of experience from beginner to advanced. If you are an experienced club or match player, please click on our club section to learn more about the club and how to get in touch. If you are thinking of taking up croquet from scratch, please keep reading this section for a brief introduction to the game and its benefits. Why play croquet?Croquet is an enjoyable, sociable game that can be played by people of any age and of either sex.Golf Croquet is quick to learn but requires accuracy and tactics to master. Both forms of the game may be played as singles or doubles and many people enjoy playing both, as skills learned in one form of the game may be applied to the other.Croquet’s effective handicap system recognises smart thinking as much as physical skill, so everyone has a good chance of winning. As with any game, the best players probably start young, but many take it up after retiring from more energetic pursuits. It can be as skilful as you want it to be – advanced players can take it very seriously, but most club members probably see it as a relaxing and friendly way of passing an afternoon.
